Preschool & Children

Children hold a special place in the heart of Christ, and they are dearly loved at Woodhaven! We plan weekly activities with care to help preschoolers and children discover God’s love.

Sunday School & Children’s Worship

9:10 – 10:10 a.m. Sunday School
10:10 – 10:30 a.m. Fellowship Time
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Children’s Worship for Kindergarten – 3rd grade
  • Infants and toddlers get lots of cuddles while preschoolers play and learn Bible stories, verses and songs. Care for infants and toddlers extends through the worship service, which ends at 11:30 a.m.
  • During Sunday School, children in Kindergarten through 5th grade learn what it means to be a Christian through hands-on activities, such as scavenger hunts, games, reading the Bible, drama and role playing. Read more about Sunday Bible Study classes for all ages.
  • Children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade have their own special worship experience in the Multipurpose Room while parents and older children participate in morning worship in the Sanctuary. Get all the details about Children’s Worship.

Wednesdays (September – May)

5:15 – 6:00 p.m. Dinner & Fellowship (Reservations required for dinner. Let us cook for you! Make your reservation now.)
6:00 p.m. – 7:35 p.m. Activities for All Ages
  • We invite children in Kindergarten through 5th grade to join us on Wednesdays for music, missions and Bible learning designed to tap into kids’ natural curiosity. We mix it up each week to show kids that following Jesus never gets old!
  • Preschool and nursery activities are available, as well, so bring the whole family and friends!
  • Learn more about Wednesday night classes for all ages.

Children’s Music

6:00 – 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays (September – May)
In our activities on Sundays and Wednesdays, preschool and elementary children learn songs, hymns, and other music for worship and fellowship. On Wednesdays, children in Kindergarten through 5th grade meet for music time from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. in the Choir Room (downstairs from the Sanctuary). Kids also learn about stories and people from the Bible, how to use the hymnal, and how to be worship leaders. The children’s choir, called Ways to Praise, is led by Stephanie de Jong and Kris Bagwell.

VBS (Vacation Bible School)

June 23 – 27, 2019 “ROAR! Life is Wild; God is Good”
Vacation Bible School is an annual favorite for children and adults. (They’re just big kids, anyway!) Held in the evenings during summer break, this special week delivers the simple truth that God loves us through a captivating theme each year. Kids remember not only the wacky skit characters and messy crafts but also the Bible points and memory verses. Our VBS is open to the community. Friends and neighbors are welcome!

Special Events

Woodhaven also offers events throughout the year to help children grow in their faith and have fun with one another. Our Children’s Council plans annual opportunities, including overnight retreats, family picnics, parents’ nights out, and seasonal activities to learn about Christian celebrations.

Ten Hard Conversations to Have with Your Teen

Puzzle illustration mom and teen
Remember your teenage years? The fears, the anxieties, the temptations, the questions, the pressures? There’s good stuff, too, but many of the changes in and around teens can be overwhelming… for young people and the adults who care about them.

Come join family and teen experts Tim Horvath and Katie Anderson Horvath during our regularly scheduled SNL (Sunday Night Live) time for five Sundays of growing together through communicating well about hard conversations. Each evening, Tim and Katie will lead us in a group time, and then youth and parents will separate for breakout sessions.

This opportunity is a joint project between Outreach and Youth Ministries. Please invite friends and parents! God cares deeply about the well-being of families and young people. Let us commit to this time of learning and loving together!

5 Sundays: September 16-October 13, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Light catered dinner provided: $5.00 per person, $15.00 family maximum. Reservations only by Wednesday. Call 919.362.0127

New Church Year Kickoff

Sky with sun behind clouds
September marks the beginning of our new church year, so we’re planning a New Year’s party, of sorts, to kick off our new theme! Our theme will help guide our spiritual growth and worship experiences throughout the year, with challenges to find personal applications for God’s word. Join us for the unveiling of the theme on Sunday, Aug. 25, with Bible Study at 9:10 a.m. and Worship at 10:30 a.m., followed by a potluck feast. Bring your favorite dishes to the church fellowship hall before the worship service. See you then, and Happy New Year!

Summer Son! Youth Girls’ Retreat

Silhouetted girl on pier
It’s new… and it will be awesome! Summer Son! is an overnight retreat for middle and high school girls. And here’s the cool part: it will be led by two of our own youth girls, Katherine Little and Casey Davis. The retreat will be based on the Christian material Lies Girls Believe.

Others tell us all sorts of lies about who we are. Jesus sees us in a different light! Let’s get together and talk about that.

The retreat will be held at Heather Simmons’ house. Stay tuned for details, but go ahead and sign up by emailing caseyedavis52@gmail.com. Hope you can come!
