Preschool & Children

Children hold a special place in the heart of Christ, and they are dearly loved at Woodhaven! We plan weekly activities with care to help preschoolers and children discover God’s love.

Sunday School & Children’s Worship

9:10 – 10:10 a.m. Sunday School
10:10 – 10:30 a.m. Fellowship Time
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Children’s Worship for Kindergarten – 3rd grade
  • Infants and toddlers get lots of cuddles while preschoolers play and learn Bible stories, verses and songs. Care for infants and toddlers extends through the worship service, which ends at 11:30 a.m.
  • During Sunday School, children in Kindergarten through 5th grade learn what it means to be a Christian through hands-on activities, such as scavenger hunts, games, reading the Bible, drama and role playing. Read more about Sunday Bible Study classes for all ages.
  • Children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade have their own special worship experience in the Multipurpose Room while parents and older children participate in morning worship in the Sanctuary. Get all the details about Children’s Worship.

Wednesdays (September – May)

5:15 – 6:00 p.m. Dinner & Fellowship (Reservations required for dinner. Let us cook for you! Make your reservation now.)
6:00 p.m. – 7:35 p.m. Activities for All Ages
  • We invite children in Kindergarten through 5th grade to join us on Wednesdays for music, missions and Bible learning designed to tap into kids’ natural curiosity. We mix it up each week to show kids that following Jesus never gets old!
  • Preschool and nursery activities are available, as well, so bring the whole family and friends!
  • Learn more about Wednesday night classes for all ages.

Children’s Music

6:00 – 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays (September – May)
In our activities on Sundays and Wednesdays, preschool and elementary children learn songs, hymns, and other music for worship and fellowship. On Wednesdays, children in Kindergarten through 5th grade meet for music time from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. in the Choir Room (downstairs from the Sanctuary). Kids also learn about stories and people from the Bible, how to use the hymnal, and how to be worship leaders. The children’s choir, called Ways to Praise, is led by Stephanie de Jong and Kris Bagwell.

VBS (Vacation Bible School)

Vacation Bible School is an annual favorite for children and adults. (They’re just big kids, anyway!) Held in the evenings during summer break, this special week delivers the simple truth that God loves us through a captivating theme each year. Kids remember not only the wacky skit characters and messy crafts but also the Bible points and memory verses. Our VBS is open to the community. Friends and neighbors are welcome!

Special Events

Woodhaven also offers events throughout the year to help children grow in their faith and have fun with one another. Our Children’s Council plans annual opportunities, including overnight retreats, family picnics, parents’ nights out, and seasonal activities to learn about Christian celebrations.

Are you ready to travel, taste some delightful foreign-influenced food, and enjoy the sights and sounds of other countries? We’ve got the ticket for you… Go “Around the World with Love” on Saturday, Feb. 9, at this year’s Youth Valentine’s Banquet, a fundraiser for youth summer missions trips.
Tickets are on sale now on Sundays and Wednesdays. The cost is $20 per person, cash or check. Invite family and friends! If you need a little help with transportation, please let us know and we’ll arrange a ride. We don’t want anyone to be left out… Think of it as your “ground transportation”!
Your journey will begin at 6 p.m. with an Italian-inspired menu of rolls, tossed salad, and a choice of entree: Baked Ziti, Spaghetti & Meatballs, Chicken Parmesan or Eggplant Parmesan. No trip to another country is complete without experiences the sweet stuff! At the end of the meal, we’ll share an assortment of international desserts. (You can save those Weight Watchers points for another day.)
During the meal, our youth will share their talents and lead you in fun activities with a little competitive spirit thrown in. This is a neat time to get to know other church members a little better and learn which teenagers go with which parents. It’s a wonderful bunch!
But the best part is the purpose: We’re supporting our youth to learn what it means to serve others and share God’s love. All the proceeds from the banquet will help cover the costs of the 2019 summer missions trip to Tennessee with Appalachia Service Project. Our youth and chaperones will be helping families in need with construction projects to make their homes warmer, safer and drier.
Won’t you join us on Feb. 9? We’re saving a seat for you.

Hanging of the Greens: What does it mean?

Light coming in Woodhaven windows
So, is it “Hanging of the Greens” or “Hanging of the Green”? There may be debate over singular or plural, but there’s no doubt about the beauty and symbolism of this Advent worship service. Simply put, it’s to put the lyric from “Joy to the World” into action: “Let every heart prepare Him room.”
In the hanging of garlands, wreaths and Chrismon ornaments, we share with Christians throughout the ages the memory and anticipation of Christ’s coming. This year, we’re moving the service to the morning worship time at 10:30 am on Sunday, Dec. 2. Please come, invite friends and neighbors, and fill your heart with the hope, peace, joy and love.
Child care is available for little ones, and children and youth can join in the delight of decorating the sanctuary and Christmas tree.

Help Habitat Rock the Block!

Two women hug at Habitat house
Woodhaven regularly partners with other churches to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. Next year, we are supporting Habitat’s Southwest Wake Faith Coalition 2019 Project: Rock the Block. The goal is to perform approximately 10 home preservation projects over two weekends!
This incredible project will require 50-100 volunteers each day from Feb. 21-23 and Feb. 28-March 2. We need 5-6 volunteers from Woodhaven to help each day. Sign up or get more info: contact Annette Pridgen at 919-796-3473 or .
