Christ-followers Read

Bible Gateway icon
by David Stratton
Who has time for Bible reading? All faithful Christ-followers realize that regular Bible reading and study must be an important discipline in their living. Yet it can be very tough in our time-poor, distraction-filled culture to develop such a discipline. Here are a couple of tips that might help:

Bible reading plans may help. Google “Bible reading plan,” or “Bible reading schedule,” and you’ll find many links to schedules that can help to hold you accountable to regular Bible reading. At biblegateway.com, there are numerous Bible reading plans you can subscribe to and get a reminder email daily. Biblegateway plans include an Old Testament/ New Testament plan (which gives a short reading from each testament daily), a chronological plan, a start from the beginning plan, a 90-day plan, etc.

Try Bible listening. You can listen to the Bible for free through the Bible Gateway website or through an app offered by Bible Gateway. I’ve been listening to a Bible a lot lately and I have been truly shocked at how much Bible “reading” I can accomplish by listening to the scriptures on the go. While on the road or tending to routine, rote chores, you can absorb the scriptures well by listening to them. If you’re “old school,” numerous Bible translations are available on audio CD at relatively low prices compared to the not too distant past.

For years I tried various approaches to reading through the Bible in a year and failed. I would fall behind and give up. Then one year I once again fell behind. But I decided not to give up that year. In the end, I managed to get caught up and reach my goal. After that, the discipline became easier. So, don’t quit! Keep trying different approaches to reading the Bible regularly until you find something that works for you.

Micro Mission Day
Can you join us on Sunday, Nov. 24? We’ll be honoring and serving God through worship and giving gifts of food and money to help others. This will be the culmination of our World Hunger Offering.

Sunday School will begin at 9:10AM. We’ll dismiss at 10:00AM for another mission adventure: Go to the Multipurpose Room in the Preschool Building to put together toiletry bags for the Dorcas Ministry. We’ll follow with some time for fellowship in the Welcome Room.

At 10:30AM, join us for a special time of praise and thanksgiving to God for his great and wonderful gifts. We will include a time to bless the food, banks and kits that will be shared in our community and world. We hope you can join us!

Ten Hard Conversations to Have with Your Teen

Puzzle illustration mom and teen
Remember your teenage years? The fears, the anxieties, the temptations, the questions, the pressures? There’s good stuff, too, but many of the changes in and around teens can be overwhelming… for young people and the adults who care about them.

Come join family and teen experts Tim Horvath and Katie Anderson Horvath during our regularly scheduled SNL (Sunday Night Live) time for five Sundays of growing together through communicating well about hard conversations. Each evening, Tim and Katie will lead us in a group time, and then youth and parents will separate for breakout sessions.

This opportunity is a joint project between Outreach and Youth Ministries. Please invite friends and parents! God cares deeply about the well-being of families and young people. Let us commit to this time of learning and loving together!

5 Sundays: September 16-October 13, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Light catered dinner provided: $5.00 per person, $15.00 family maximum. Reservations only by Wednesday. Call 919.362.0127

Christmas is coming? Yes! The Woodhaven worship choir will soon be learning the Christmas cantata “Heaven’s Child”… and will present the musical message this fall at Carnegie Hall in New York City under the direction of the composer himself, Pepper Choplin. (In December, the choir will share the cantata with our Woodhaven community, too.)

Here’s where you come in. We need your support for the trip! Join us for a special Christmas in July evening on Sunday, July 14, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. here at Woodhaven Baptist Church. Tap your toes to the bluegrass sounds of the Kudzu Ramblers, and enjoy dinner and fellowship. Friends, neighbors and community members are welcomed. Nothing says Christmas more than bluegrass, right?
Tickets are $10 per person, with a “family cap” at $40. Children ages 10 and under are free. Please register online, and pay at the event.
